Creativity and my struggle with it

I used to think I wasn’t very creative. I always found it odd when people told me I was creative (like when I’d build something out of a random pile of legos). I appreciate the compliment, but didn’t necessarily understand it.

I have always wanted to be creative… Someday I would love to write a book our draw or paint some really cool artwork, or learn how to play an instrument, or something else that’s creative…

It just seems they every time I try I either freeze up or i’m not ever content with my effort so I give up before I even get started… I tell myself “it’s ok, i’m just not the creative type”.

But is that true? Am I really not they creative? What about all those times people have said I was creative? Were they just trying to make me feel good about myself?

Maybe i’m just “accidentally creative” every now and then?

Or maybe I am creative and i’m just self defeating?

I really don’t know the answer, but I hope some day I’ll figure it out…

I wonder if anyone else feels this way…

(disclaimer: I typed this on my phone, so I apologize for any typos, improper auto-corrects, or what have you.)

95% of People Won’t Re-Post / Like This…

Re-post this -- because I said so...

It is getting to the point where I can’t stand being on Facebook any more. It seems I can’t be on there for more than 10 minutes without something like this popping up on my news-feed! I am beginning to wonder if I am the only sane/rational person in this world… Or am I the one who’s lost it?

You know exactly what I’m talking about (well you should if you’ve spent 5 minutes on the internet). I really shouldn’t have to go into great detail about this topic, so I’ll keep it simple — if nothing else, but for my own sanity — and get this rant over with.

“Dude, what are you ranting about?!”

The current trend is simple. Someone posts something (generally on facebook, but it happens on other sites too) and somewhere near the end of the statement it will say “Re-Post this if you agree” or “Like this if you agree” or some flavor of “re-post” and/or “like” in the form of a command… And without fail people cannot help themselves! People, millions of them, re-post and/or like these things, many of them re-posting the same (or very similar) things over and over in the span of days (or even on the same day)!

This is getting ridiculous!

This stuff comes in different shapes and forms. Here’s a quick list (shortened to topic/idea, because I have no patience for this):

  • You’re not my friend unless you re-post/like this
  • You’re not a Christian — I.E. you’re ashamed of Jesus — if you don’t re-post/like this
  • *Some random percentage in the 80’s to 90’s range* % of people will not re-post this (and  you don’t want to be one of THEM)
  • Facebook/Myspace/Etc. is going to start charging you money so re-post to share with everyone
  • Some other serious, but most likely not true, “fact(s)” that you must re-post or you’re heartless and part of the “system”
  • Some catchy phrase or funny joke — but re-post it because I told you too (not because you liked it)
  • Parody re-reposts (basically like above only mocking/making fun of the above)
  • And etc. etc. etc….

I’ve seen this with text-messages too… I’m sure this still happens in emails too, but I think that may be dieing out. I know I’m not the only one who remembers the Urban Legend Chain-Emails form the 90’s right? Wow those were annoying! Oh yeah, and Bill Gates wants to give you money just for forwarding this email on to everyone of your contacts… my friend is a lawyer and verified this is true and legal (pft yeah right)…

I once tried to come up with a reasonable/logical conclusion as to why people constantly take part in this… But then I gave up because it was a pointless quest.

I have loved ones and friends who do this so I have been quite about it for a very long time, but I can’t take it any more! I am calling for a moratorium on this nonsense! Of course, no one is going to care about that or what I have to say… So instead here’s a quick poll for you, perhaps your answers can help me make sense of it all… oh yeah, and after you do the poll… since I know you can’t help yourselves… RE-POST THIS ON FACEBOOK / MYSPACE | and ETC! 😉

Fix Ubuntu 10.10 Slowness

Some people have been reporting problems with Ubuntu 10.10 being sluggish, slow, and worse. This is not the first update from Ubuntu to have such a result, but don’t worry because there is hope!

The odds are your problem is due to a conflict with the Kernel that is released with Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat.

Upgrading the Kernel – Problems??

So why not try updating to the latest Kernel? The problem is that Kernel you likely need isn’t going to be available using the usual Ubuntu update methods (i.e. Update Manager, Ubuntu Software Center, Synaptic, or even Apt/Aptitude).

Why So Difficult??

The challenge is that Ubuntu releases new versions with the latest available Kernel at the time of the release (well, for the most part anyway). As a result, the kernel you have (and is possibly causing you grief) is in fact the “latest” kernel for your system…

So What Are You Talking About Man?!

Well to fix your problem you are going to get the latest Release Candidate (or RC) Kernel. Don’t be scared, you will be keeping your default kernel so if there were ever a problem you could just boot up with that…

Let’s Do This!

OK the fastest and easiest way to do this is using your Terminal (of course). Go ahead and open it up (Applications->Accessories->Terminal or alternatively by pressing Alt+F2, but stick with the former option if you are uncomfortable going GUI-less).

Enter the following commands in your terminal to download the kernel parts you will need and then install them: (Please Note: you need to pick amd64 if you are running 64bit Ubuntu, otherwise pick the i386)

For 64-bit use this:

wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-rc7-maverick/linux-headers-2.6.36-020636rc7_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_all.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-rc7-maverick/linux-headers-2.6.36-020636rc7-generic_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_amd64.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-rc7-maverick/linux-image-2.6.36-020636rc7-generic_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_amd64.deb

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.36-020636rc7_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.36-020636rc7-generic_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.36-020636rc7-generic_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_amd64.deb

For 32-bit use this:

wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-rc7-maverick/linux-headers-2.6.36-020636rc7_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_all.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-rc7-maverick/linux-headers-2.6.36-020636rc7-generic_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_i386.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.36-rc7-maverick/linux-image-2.6.36-020636rc7-generic_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_i386.deb

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.36-020636rc7_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.36-020636rc7-generic_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.36-020636rc7-generic_2.6.36-020636rc7.201010070908_i386.deb

All Done!

If all goes according to plan you should be able to restart your computer and boot up with the new RC Kernel. Hopefully this fixes your problem. If it does not fix your problem, let me know and I’ll see if I can help. Or try the Ubuntu Forums.

If only I had more time…

Am I the only one who feels like there is not enough time in a day to accomplish everything there is to be accomplished?

Or maybe that’s just my problem. I can’t seem to focus on just one thing at a time and get that done… Instead I jump from project to project, completing a little here and a little there. I’ve tried To-Do lists, I’ve tried Sticky Notes, I’ve tried minimalistic interfaces, and a whole bunch of other things that are supposed to limit distractions… but no matter what I do I can’t stop my brain from thinking up new and great ideas that I want to work on now!

If only I had more time… Of course in order for this idea to work, I would have to be the only person with that extra time in the day, because if this extra time was available to everyone then the standards of the world would just increase to meet the new time restraints and we’d back to where we were. It’s kind of like how raising minimum wage doesn’t really help anyone, it just increases inflation and hurts the people who had worked so hard to get raises up and away from minimum wage…

So what I want/need is a time increase for just me. And since that will never happen, I suppose I need to find a way to focus and be more productive.

Help Me!

While normally I only post about “Antidotes” or solutions to problems I have come up with, I’m stumped here. So I’m asking you — people of the interwebs — to help me!

If you have a solution to my problem, post a comment below or tweet me (@alexsantidote). Thanks!
